What it is
The Public Provident Fund is a government-backed savings account that runs for 15 years and can be extended 5 years at a time. You can put in ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh a year.
How it's worked out
Each year's deposit is added at the start of the year and the balance earns the yearly rate. Maturity = what you deposit plus all the interest it earns.
What each input means
- Yearly Contribution: How much you will put in each year.
- PPF Interest Rate (p.a.): The yearly interest % — use today's rate from the bank or post office.
- Tenure: For how many more years you will deposit. A new PPF runs 15 years and can be extended 5 years at a time.
- Current Balance: What is in the account today, if it is already running. Optional.
Good to know
Deposits, interest and maturity are all tax-free (deposits count under 80C in the old regime). The government reviews the rate every quarter. Depositing before the 5th of a month earns that month's interest.
A quick example
₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years at 7.1%: ₹22.5 lakh deposited grows to about ₹40.7 lakh.
